With so much to do and see in Ella, Sri Lanka – find out how we fit it all into 2 nights!
We arrived in Ella late after amazing train journey from Hatton. This has to be the most scenic train journey we have been on and although we didn’t have a seat, we were perfectly fine sitting on our bags at the door taking in the views.
On our way to our guest house we decided to stop off for dinner and have a traditional Sri Lankan meal. We chose to taste the local dish ‘lump rice’ and it tasted fantastic. We headed to our guest house where we were greeted by the sounds of waterfalls, and were instantly excited to take in the view the following morning. We woke up and were blown away by the awe inspiring view that greeted of us of greenery, tea plantations and Rawana Falls. We stayed at Rawana Fall View Guest House and were so pleased with the large windows and balcony that looked out over the view and falls. We headed out to start our day and decided to purchase the guest house owners scooter to explore for the day, we used the scooter to drive all the way to the top of Rawana falls and stopped at the various tiered viewing points for a closer look and some photos. When exploring the falls at one tier we were approached by some local children who took us through green bean tree’s to a closer look at the falls. The falls were beautiful and can be swum in at the bottom. We finished our day with dinner at the Chill Cafe, the Chill Cafe serves a range of western and Sri Lankan dishes along with an amazing selection of cocktails and beers. The Chill Cafe is the go to hangout spot, and you can also book an early morning cooking class there in which you learn how to cook 6 different Sri Lankan curries which of course then need to be eaten for your lunch!
Finally on our last day in Ella we took the scooter up the hills to the tea factory. The tea factory is one of the largest in Sri Lanka and one of the only factories that makes a variety of tea. You can pay the 300 rupees for a tour of the factory in action and finish off your tour at the roof top with a tasty cup of tea overlooking the tea plantations. It’s worth mentioning the tea factory is closed on Sunday and is non operational on Monday as the tea has to picked. We had such a short time in Ella and could have spent hours just gazing at the endless views.
