Tourists wishing to immerse themselves in culture will be in their element in Spains capital city Madrid. Traditional Spanish style living and Spanish architecture at it’s best is one of the best ingredients to this city break.
Although there are no well known large icons to see immersing yourself in the local way of life as you head out to tapas bars to watch the city go by is the main perk to this bustling city.
Friday
Arrive in Madrid on Friday morning to ensure you make the most of the cities cosmopolitan vibe. Start by exploring the cities hub Puerta del Sol take in the scenery and people watch from the fountain as this charming city goes by. Whilst you are there be sure to check out Estacion de Atocha train station which doubles as a tropical garden. This oasis is calm in the mist of this busy city.
Next head to Mercado de San Miguel food market and sample some of the cities best tapas dishes. Be lucky enough to grab a table to sit by the wine and beer stalls to make the most of your afternoon.
Hitting the shops in Calle de Fuencarral is the trendiest spot in town to shop the afternoon away. Smaller Spanish and designer boutiques can be found to get your outfit for the night ahead.
As the locals prepare for Friday night on the town head to Temple de Debod for sunset. Get there early to get a good seat and watch in awe as the temple’s lights come on giving off a magical vibe in the twilight sky.
Once the sun has set head towards the Gran Via and be sure to grab a cocktail or two in one of the cities many rood top bars.
After a few drinks and the evening begins to wind down head to Choclateria san Gines to end the night on a sweet note. Get a table under the arch and order yourself some churros and hot chocolate.
Saturday
Wake up early and grab a morning boat ride in El Rastro park. Watch the locals stroll and jog about the park on their Saturday morning. Then grab a baguette or pastry in one of the parks many cafes.
On the way from the park head towards the Gran Via for some high street shopping. This bustling street offers Spanish favourites such as Zara and Berskha along with international brands.Stop by one of the many coffee shops and sit outside and watch the taxi’s wiz by.
Use the afternoon to browse the Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofia this gallery of contemporary art showcases art from artists such as Picaso and Dali. A visit to Madrid would not be complete without sampling one of it’s museums.
Spend the evening around the Huertas area and get dinner al fresco in the square. These tapas restaurants offer drinks and platters late into the night surrounded by the sounds of local musicians. Watch as locals meet with friends and indulge in this past time of eating, drinking and smoking.
Next head down the side streets to see Spanish dancing in action at one of the cities night clubs. Listen to a mix of Spanish and international artists and sip on cocktails as the night goes on.
Sunday
Be sure to head out early to catch El Rastro Sunday morning flea market. The market opens early and getting there before the crowd sets in is a must! Browse the selection of Spanish fashion, vintage clothing and accessories as you head through the market stretch.
Heading back be sure to hit Plaza Mayor. The cities main square has something for everyone. The architecture surrounding the mayor’s building is a attraction in itself. Choose a cafe to chill out and grab a coffee. Watch as the street artists perform and bubbles are blown high into the square. The shops around the square sell traditional Spanish attire which can be purchased as souvenirs.
For lunch head to Cervecteria to get a famous Calamari baguette – these are a tradition in Madrid and these are the best ones around.
