Staying in a house boat in Kerala

Any visit to India is not complete without a visit to Kerala. With palm tree fringed river edges and endless rice fields a stay in a houseboat is the best way to see beauty.  The best place to find a houseboat is in Alleppey. With docks lined with houseboats you will have your pick as long as you arrive early. Our houseboatWe recommend you do not book your house boat in advance and arrive bright and early at the docks to have your pick and barter your price! The houseboats arrive back at the docks around 8/9am and it’s the perfect time to have a look and talk to travellers and they disembark from their trip. The boats go back out again 12:00pm so you have plenty of time to take your pick. We chose Mentor houseboat and were pleased with our choice. The boat was beautifully designed with plenty of seating options to both relax and bathe in the sun. Inside our houseboat Our room was simple and basic but clean with all of the amenities you will need such as hot water and electricity.  The owner of the boat was there for the whole trip to ensure we had a great stay. Giving us knowledge of the area and the local villages as well as cooking up some of the tastiest food from our entire India trip! When arriving on the boat we were shown to our rooms as the boat disembarked and headed down the backwaters. We quickly took our seats and enjoyed the colourful scenery. The Kerala backwaters The Kerala back waters We were seated for lunch and took in the beautiful view as we feasted on fish from the daily catch. After lunch we cruised past the local villages with inside knowledge from our houseboat owner who lives in the local village.Locals in the Kerala back waters  With sunset approaching we moored along the backwaters and were able to get off of the boat and watch the sunset over the rice fields. Sunset in the Kerala back waters We sat down for dinner and enjoyed a traditional chicken curry with all of the trimmings as well as some prawns we had picked up at the earlier fish market! We spent the night there and finished our trip with breakfast as we cruised back to Allippey via the backwaters. The Kerala back waters We loved our houseboat stay in Kerala and recommend the experience to all!
