When heading to Iceland you will undoubtedly want to visit one of the countries geothermal spa pools. The Blue Lagoon is definitely the most popular and well know lagoon in the country. However the close by secret lagoon is becoming more populer due to it’s natural heat and location. Iceland’s blue lagoon is a man made geothermal spa pool. The water is heated at the nearby geothermal power station. Although the pool itself is man made the blue like colour the lagoon is so famous for is naturally made by the silica and algae that frequents the lagoon. The water is heated to a pleasing 37 celsius so there is no way you will get cold even if it’s raining or snowing outside.  Blue Lagoon One way one world Pros

  • You will be visiting the number one tourist attractions in Iceland
  • There is a swim up bar
  • Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room included in all packages
  • Clay masks included and algae mask included in some packages
  • The lagoon spa offers in water massages for an additional price
  • It’s famous blue like colour
  • The Lava restaurant offers meals overlooking the Blue Lagoon
  • It’s large size gives more space for visitors to explore
  • Large and clean changing areas with safe lockers as well as luggage storage
  • The automatic wristband allows you to purchase without having to carry money 
  • It’s location near the airport allows you to make the most of your travel day
  • Hotel with private lagoon next door

Cons

  • The price – The many different packages are very highly priced
  • The lagoon is much busier
  • It’s man made vs being a natural geothermal pool.
  • You have to book well in advance

  • Expensive food and drink

The secret lagoon

Iceland’s secret lagoon is located in the Fludir on the edge of the golden circle drive. 1.5 hours fromReykjavik and 98km you can do this as part of your self drive tour. This lagoon is naturally heated from the hot springs and stays at around 38-40 Celsius all year round. The lagoon is also next to its very own small geyser.Secret Lagoon One way one world Pros

  • Walk in’s are available
  • Floats are available for any non swimmers or to float and relax
  • Outdoor walking trails allow you to fully take in the surroundings 
  • The secret Lagoon has it’s very own small Geyser
  • The Secret Lagoon is much cheaper in price
  • It’s located amongst some amazing scenery and views 
  • Less busy

Cons

  • Small variety of food options
  • Smaller lagoon
  • The lagoon is natural and does not have the iconic blue like colour
  • It’s much further from Reykjavik

Secret Lagoon One way one world Our verdict 

After experiencing both lagoons we definitely preferred the Blue Lagoon. Although we enjoyed both and ideally we would recommend everyone to experience both as they were such different experiences we felt there was something more magical about the Blue Lagoon – the colour, the atmosphere and the overall environment.  Blue Lagoon One way one world
